About

We look beyond the obvious.

Wilderness Eye is a founder-led Kenyan photography, film and writing studio documenting places and organisations connected to travel, conservation and community across East Africa.

Founder

Kennedy’s advantage is not simply access to a camera. It is access to context.

Kennedy Mutuma is a Kenyan expedition guide, safari professional, photographer and writer based between Nairobi and Nanyuki.

Through Wilderness Alternative Expedition, he works across Mount Kenya, Kilimanjaro and safari travel. Through Kurunzi Fund, he has helped document education, school-feeding, kitchen-garden and community projects. These two worlds—wilderness and community—shape how he approaches a story.

He understands that a lodge is an operation before it becomes an image, that a mountain summit depends on a crew and that an impact story needs more than a photograph of a handover.

A focused studio with a long view.

Wilderness Eye is founder-led and growing deliberately, with real field experience, clear authorship and no invented scale.

The studio combines a distinctive visual language, a carefully labelled portfolio and an editorial platform that can grow through assignments, partnerships and original reporting.

How the work is made

01

Understand

Learn the place, audience and practical communication problem before choosing formats.

02

Observe

Spend enough time on the ground to see routines, relationships and details beyond the obvious frame.

03

Represent responsibly

Use consent, accurate captions, safeguarding and clear disclosure of commissioned work.

04

Shape the story

Edit photographs, footage and words into one coherent narrative rather than unrelated content.

05

Deliver for use

Organise the library for website, press, reports, campaigns and long-term retrieval.

06

Return

Where the story needs time, document change rather than treating one visit as the full truth.

Four identities, clear boundaries.

  • Wilderness Eye is the creative and editorial studio.
  • Wilderness Alternative Expedition is the travel and expedition business.
  • Kurunzi Fund is the non-profit and community organisation.
  • Kenny on Safari is Kennedy’s personal field and photography presence.

Any work involving another organisation is labelled as collaborative, commissioned or founder-connected so audiences understand the relationship.

Why Wilderness Eye exists

East African destinations are often represented through the same few images. Wilderness Eye was created to document the wider truth: the work behind hospitality, the people behind expeditions, the relationship between conservation and livelihoods, and the details that allow a place to feel specific rather than interchangeable.

Founder-led, not founder-only

Kennedy leads creative direction, field access, photography and writing. Film editing, sound, design, specialist drone operations and additional production roles can be brought in according to the assignment. The aim is to remain focused while building the right team for the work.

Associated organisations

Wilderness Alternative Expedition, Kurunzi Fund and Kenny on Safari are related through Kennedy’s work but remain distinct. Every project should state whether it is commissioned, independent, collaborative or connected to one of these organisations.
